Opening of first Regional Office

In an effort to better service our growing number of clients in the western U.S., Safety Compliance Services is opening our first regional office in Phoenix, Arizona. Although we have provided training and consulting services to clients in the western area of the country for years through our original Syracuse, New York office, we have been limited in providing our rescue and safety supervisor/first responder services to many of our western U.S. clients due to logistical considerations. With our opening of an office in Phoenix, we believe we can greatly expand our reach in the western United States as well as being able to enhance our offerings, customer service and value to our existing client base in that part of the country. We are confident we have selected an excellent team to lead our Phoenix operations and believe all our clients will see increased value and service with this growth without sacrificing any of the expertise and customer service they have come to expect from us. If you wish to contact our southwest regional office to discuss our services, they will officially be open on January 2, 2010 and may be reached at 480-945-1272.

Acquisition to Enhance our Growth

In our continuing efforts to enhance our services and grow our organization, Safety Compliance Services has acquired RescueRIG based in Phoenix Arizona. RescueRIG was established by Phoenix firefighter Pat Rhodes in 1997, as an organization specializing in technical rope access and rescue training. RescueRIG has built an excellent reputation by providing outstanding customer service while providing unparalleled training expertise in their field. (More information on fire/rescue services provided by RescueRIG may be found at www.rescuerig.com ). These are the core values of Safety Compliance Services and one of the primary reasons we chose to acquire RescueRIG as our vehicle to providing expertise in this highly specialized area of training. We believe this acquisition will greatly enhance what we can provide to our clients as well as allow us to attract new clients with a need for highly technical rope access and rescue training, including the rapidly growing wind turbine field.

Addition of 2nd Rescue Vehicle

Our Rescue Services Division is adding a second fully equipped Rescue Vehicle to accommodate the growth in our Standby Rescue services. With having been contracted to provide standby rescue service for 2 planned maintenance outages at coal burning power plants simultaneously this spring, it became necessary to add additional rescue equipment and a vehicle to contain and transport the equipment. Our Rescue Team is staffed adequately to provide for the simultaneous service, but an investment in equipment was necessary to ensure no reduction in the level of resources and service each facility expects from us was necessary to fulfill or simultaneous obligations.

Fit Testing of Hearing Protection Devices

Safety Compliance Services is pleased to announce we have added a new service for our clients. Due to the inaccuracy of published Noise Reduction Ratings (NRRs) relative to actual noise attenuation achieved by hearing protection device users, we have been advising client personnel of NIOSH study results (see chart below) and OSHA recommended de-rating of NRRs as part of our hearing conservation training for many years. The attenuation provided to wearers with improperly fitted plugs or to individuals with narrow, sharply bending or slit-shaped ear canals may be only a fraction of the labeled laboratory values. Recently, several companies have developed technologies that allow for real-world determination of the attenuation achieved by each individual user of hearing protection devices. After researching the available technology over several months last year, we have selected and acquired the FitCheck Hearing Protection Measurement System by Michael & Associates, Inc. to allow us to provide fit testing services for hearing protection devices as part of our hearing conservation training.

Rescue Team Participates in Plant Rescue Drill

As part of our Standby Rescue Service for a New Jersey coal burning electric generating company, our team was asked to lead a practice rescue of a simulated worker incapacitated while working from a suspended scaffold while inside the facility boiler. The scenario placed the “victim” suspended by his lifeline after having fallen from a suspended scaffold approximately 80 feet above the boiler “Dance Floor”.

Our 2-man rescue team led the rescue evolution with trained Plant personnel providing supporting services in rope tending and patient packaging. As a side note, Safety Compliance Services training division provided the generating facility with their ongoing Confined Space Rescue training earlier in the year.

Fitzpatrick Outage Complete

Starting on September 10, 2008 twelve SCS Confined Space Rescue technicians with full rescue equipment were on duty 24/7 for the Refueling Outage at the James A. Fitzpatrick Nuclear Station which concluded October 7, 2008.

The plant owned and operated by Entergy is an 838 megawatt BWR (Boiling Water Reactor).

Operating in 2 person teams SCS personnel preplanned rescues for all entries into confined spaces and assisted Plant safety personnel with safety and fire prevention inspections. A professional working relationship between Plant fire brigade members and SCS personnel was formed through positive interaction and daily drills conducted by on duty teams. In the event of a Confined Space Recue, SCS and JAF personnel were well prepared to work together through a pre-established NIMS Unified Command System implemented to provide for safe operations.

Our work with Yale University’s Office of Facilities Utilities continued this month with Mike Hart providing Yale University personnel with training in basic confined space rescue techniques to allow Facilities Utilities personnel to provide for extraction of co-workers from manholes and vaults should an injury or illness occur during entry operations.
We are proud to announce that our Standby Rescue Service has been chosen to provide the James A. Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Lycoming, New York with 24/7 rescue standby service for their 2008 outage. The quality of our service package, the qualifications and training of our personnel, and the resources our Team can provide to the Plant were deciding factors in our selection. This is our first contract with Entergy Nuclear Operations and it is the sentiment of all involved that our relationship with Entergy will be long term as we look to the future.
